September brings in more than one kind of bean. At High Plains, harvest season means bringing in a variety of dry beans, including mayocoba, pinto, black, and more.
Each variety has its own characteristics and favorite uses, giving cooks plenty of ways to enjoy Colorado-grown beans throughout the year.
What Happens During Harvest?
Dry beans are planted in the spring and early summer, giving the crops several months to develop before harvest arrives. As the plants mature, they begin to dry down and the beans become ready to harvest.
Timing is an important part of the process. Growers carefully monitor their crops and field conditions to determine when the beans are ready to come out of the field while maintaining quality.
By September, fields across Colorado are busy with harvest activity. It's a season that represents months of planning, hard work, and careful decision-making by the growers who have been tending their crops since planting.
Once harvested, the beans continue their journey. They are cleaned, sorted, processed, and prepared to eventually reach customers looking for high-quality dry beans.
